Southampton doesn't actually have any beaches, however there are a number of beaches close by and in Hampshire that are well worth visiting.
Calshot beach is part of a shingle spit on the Hampshire coast which extends westward into the southern end of Southampton Water. It has an activities centre which includes a dry ski slope and a climbing wall.
Southsea beach stretches from Old Portsmouth to Eastney. The beach itself is made up mainly shingle, although a stretch of sand is exposed at low tide.
Tanners Lane is a long road which runs through the wonderful New Forest. Travel to the end and you will finally reach a quiet and beautiful pebble beach. If you are patient you may even spot some of the New Forest ponies wondering along the coastline.
Highcliffe Beach sits between the borders of Dorset and Hampshire. This long stretch friendly beach is made of both single and sand and is popular with families and surfers. The beach is a short drive from Southampton City Centre, and benefits from a large car park and includes toilets and baby changing facilities as well as a cool café.
Milford on Sea Beach is a long shingle beach with sand at the waters edge during low tide with beach huts along the beachfront.
Hayling Island has over 3 miles of beaches along the seafront facing the Solent.
Just south of Bournemouth this Blue Flag stretch of sand and shingle is just far enough away from Bournemouth Pier to get away from the noise and enjoy some quiet time but still close enough when you are ready to go back.
There are plenty of Southampton hotels and self catering options in and around Southampton city centre including the amazing leonardo royal hotel and the Jurys Inn London hotel. Further out into the new Forest is the stunning Crown Manor House.
When searching for beaches in Southampton be careful as there is also a Southampton in the states with a number of popular beaches like Coopers Beach, meschutt beach and ponquogue beach.
There are boards along some of the beach fronts to guide people in their use whether it is swimming or kite surfing etc. Not all beaches do permit swimming and we advise you always check the tide times and be careful.
Hampshire beaches are a mixture of sand and shingle.
Swimming at Weston Shore Promenade is not allowed as the beach is next to an industrial area. The beach is dog friendly, and there is a dedicated space for dogs to play.
The Town Council advise dogs should be on a leash and under supervision at all times. Some beaches dogs are not allowed on or at specific times of the year.
